The Monotype images were a limited series produced mainly circa 1985.
Subject matter of this series was entirely portrait based, however mostly all of the people depicted were of Jamie Howard’s own creation, with a few exceptions of people known to him. One such subject was a lifelong friend, Maureen Rosenbaulm, a singing instructor and former student.
Inspirations include Albreicht Durer, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Egon Schiele, and Max Kaus.
Methods Used
First, an image was created in reverse on a semi-flexible smooth surface with a thickened ink. Prepared paper was then placed on the reversed image and run through a printing press using light pressure. This resulted in a positive transfer of the image but only allowed for a single run.
